A career in Hairdressing

Hairdressing is a popular career choice that a number of people enjoy as a living. A Hairdresser will style, cut, dye and shampooing people’s hair as well as many other services. A career in hairdressing has various prospects and can lead to a busy social life attending many shows and fairs.

As well as having the right qualifications or experience hairdressers also need the right personal qualities to develop.

A Candidate needs to be good with their hands and able to learn new skills. A degree of creativity is required as well as excellent customer service skills. These two attributes will often be tested as customers will ask for recommendations for different hairstyles for different reasons. As a hairdresser, you need to be enthusiastic about your work and keep up to date with new styles and fashions.

If you are wishing to start work as hairdresser and are aged between sixteen and twenty four you can apply for a modern apprenticeship course. NVQs and other courses are also available at colleges for people of all ages.

Salons are normally open during normal office hours from Monday to Saturday. Most salons stay open late for at least one night each week to enable customers to come who can’t come during the day.

When hairdressers first start employment they will often be given small jobs to gradually ease them into the work. These include keeping the salon clean, receptionist work and washing hair.

Once qualified, many hairdressers carry on developing their skills in a number of specialist areas. This can include dyeing and colouring techniques as well as alternative therapies and other salon services.

After working as a stylist in a salon some hairdressers decide to open their own salons and go into business for themselves. On the other hand some people start mobile hairdressing businesses visiting people in the community who have problems with manoeuvrability or who cannot leave their home for other reasons. If you would like to pursue either of these it is recommended that you study a business management course at NVQ level.
