Why take a hairdressing course

Hairdressers cut, colour and style their clients' hair to create the look they are after.  The best way to start your journey as a hairdresser is to take a hairdressing course.  Hairdressing courses usually consist of taking an NVQ but there other types of specialised courses in hairdressing such as braiding and extension techniques.

There are a number of colleges that provide courses in hairdressing as well as training centres and academies.  Hairdressing courses usually last between one and two years but some training providers do offer intensive courses to enable you to finish quicker.

What you will cover on hairdressing courses
Most hairdressers start out as apprentices or trainees. As a trainee hairdresser you would usually begin by undertaking simple tasks such as:

  • Cleaning the salon making sure it is neat and tidy.
  • Meet and greet customers
  • Shampooing clients’ hair

When you are qualified at hairdressing your tasks will include:

  • styling and cutting hair
  • shampooing and conditioning
  • talking with the client  on how they want their hair styled and  suggesting ideas for suitable styles
  • colouring, perming or straightening hair
  • as a hairdresser you may advise on minor hair and scalp problems
  • ordering materials
  • make appointments and handle payments
