Course Information for hairdressing NVQ 2

Now you have successfully completed the NVQ level 1 Its time to move onto the Hairdressing NVQ level 2.

On the level 2 course, you will learn the basic skills to become a capable hairdresser. An NVQ Level 2 is the national requirement for being a registered and a qualified hairdresser.

  • Developing Hair cutting techniques
  • Hair colouring with an array of techniques
  • Blow drying
  • Hair perming procedures
  • Hair setting
  • Shampooing and conditioning
  • Health and safety procedures
  • Working the reception
  • Working as part of a team

You will also be gain many other practical skills in hair styling, cutting and colouring hair.
In addition, you will gain vital skills to support your practical work including Information Technology and communications.

Entry requirements for the course
Passing the Hairdressing NVQ level 1 or have achieved 4 GCSEs at grade level D which includes Maths or English.  


How long is the course?
1 year


What happens when I finish the course?
After completing the NVQ course you will be ready for a job in a hair salon or have the necessary skills to become your own boss as a self employed hairstylist. If you like you can go onto do the level 3 NVQ. This will provide you with even more skills and further your career in the hairstyling industry.

How you are assessed
Assessement will be ongoing and it is mandatory for students to exhibit competency in a range of different tasks.  Vital skills will be assessed through portfolio and exam.

What else you should know
As with level 1 you should be encouraged to attend hair shows and events.  You should also enter competitions that will help you progress in the fast paced world of the hair industry.
